Tips for portion control and eating out

Here are some useful general pointers to keep in mind:

  • Studies suggest that on average, we can under-estimate how much we eat by 25 per cent.
  • Learn to ¬ëget your eye in¬í. For example, at home measure a cup of pasta or 4 heaped tablespoons of rice and put it on a plate. Note how much space it takes up. Use your knowledge when you eat out.
  • Avoid restaurants serving ¬ëall you can eat¬í buffets ¬ñ it¬ís so hard to stop eating!
  • If you eat out regularly try to go to cafes and restaurants that you know have choices that suit you. Decide what you will have before you go ¬ñ and stick to it.
  • If friends invite you over, let them know in advance that you are watching what you eat, so it doesn¬ít become an issue at dinner, if you choose not to eat everything on offer.
  • Have fruit at work, in the car in your bag or briefcase each day, so it¬ís to hand when you need a snack.
