Referral to a dietician

Availability of local dietetic support will vary across the country, but most PCTs now employ dietitians, who can offer additional support to the team with respect to:

  • The development of strategies and local weight management services
  • The training of other healthcare professionals in obesity management
  • Counselling patients who do not respond to first-line advice or who have an existing medical condition, which requires more detailed advice
  • Running weight management groups or supporting locally run groups
  • Providing up-to-date information that is independent and evidence-based ¬ñ often the only reliable source on the latest ¬ëfad diet¬í!
  • Supporting patients who are being considered for bariatric surgery and postoperatively for long-term follow up.
