During NOW 2011 the National Obesity Forum decided to highlight the efforts of some food manufacturers in making their products more healthy. Over the past ten years the organisation has been very critical of companies producing food and drink containing high levels of ingredients such as salt, fat and sugar which are a major cause of obesity. However since 2002 many companies have started to recalculate the levels of such ingredients in their products in an attempt to re-educate their customers to like their healthier goods.
Tam Fry, spokesman for the NOF, said “It’s now become apparent that this strategy is working, and we feel the time’s right for us to re-evaluate our criticism and acknowledge those companies we feel have made huge advances in reformulating their products, meaning there are less calories in each item.”
We must stress that we have not given up promoting our message that the way to combat obesity is to eat healthily and exercise more but that we are prepared to acknowledge the steps that the food industry are taking to provide healthier alternatives to previously unhealthy foods.
The NOF would like to thank all the individuals, PCTs and organisations who organised events to mark NOW 2011. These included Bromley PCT, Norfolk Life Team, Southend United Community and Educational Trust and the British Liver Trust.
