Westminster Food & Nutrition Forum: Policies for food in schools and early years

Policy priorities for food in schools and early years settings: standards, education and funding

Tuesday, 27th June 2017

Central London

THIS EVENT IS CPD CERTIFIED

Guest of Honour

Linda Cregan, Chief Executive Officer, Children’s Food Trust and Co-Chair, School Food Plan Alliance

This seminar will assess next steps for policymakers, educators, parents, local councils and suppliers working together to deliver healthy school and early years environments across England - alongside wider moves to reduce childhood obesity levels.

It takes place ahead of a new Ofsted-monitored voluntary healthy rating scheme for primary schools being introduced from September 2017 - as set out in the Government's obesity plan - which will assess how well schools promote and support pupil’s knowledge of healthy eating.

Sessions will examine the priorities for the Department for Education when updating the School Food Standards 2015 in light of refreshed government dietary recommendations, as well as how to ensure academies and free schools also demonstrate a clear commitment to compliance.

Further sessions will consider the possibility of introducing auto-registration for free school meals, with opposition MPs calling for an amendment to the new Digital Economy Bill, to ensure all qualifying low-income families benefit from this entitlement, as well as options for reducing the number of fast food outlets in close proximity to schools such as capping planning permissions or limiting offsite access for students during school hours.

Next steps for tackling obesity: prevention, sugar consumption and policy priorities

Thursday 27th October 2016
Central Edinburgh

This event is CPD certified

Guests of Honour: Geoff Ogle, ask Chief Executive, ambulance Food Standards Scotland and David Thomson, cialis Chief Executive Officer, Scottish Food and Drink Federation

Following publication of the revised Scottish Dietary Goals - which match SACN’s advice that intake of free sugars should be halved - and Food Standards Scotland’s report on the Scottish diet in December 2015 suggesting a lack of progress towards improving the Scottish diet, this seminar will provide an opportunity for delegates to consider future priorities for tackling obesity.

Discussion will focus on the potential of further regulation and taxation, including a sugar tax; the role of advertising; latest thinking on consumer choices and behaviour; and the progress and future challenges of the reformulation of products to reduce sugar content.

The 2nd Diabetes Surgery Summit

The 2nd Diabetes Surgery Summit

Dear Colleagues and Friends,

On behalf of the organizing committee, it is our pleasure to announce the 2nd Diabetes Surgery Summit (DSS-II), one of the most important scientific events of 2015.

Despite evidence that bariatric/metabolic surgery can achieve excellent control of type 2 diabetes and reduce cardiometabolic risk, this potentially life-saving approach has not yet been properly integrated in the treatment algorithm of type 2 diabetes.

The 2nd Diabetes Surgery Summit (DSS-II) is a consensus conference aimed at the development of clinical guidelines for surgical treatment of type 2 diabetes. The DSS-II will be held jointly with the 3rd World Congress on Interventional Therapies of Type 2 Diabetes (London, UK; Sept 28-30, 2015)

The DSS-II is organised in collaboration with the American Diabetes Association (ADA), the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD), Diabetes UK (DUK) and the Chinese Diabetes Society (CDS). A multidisciplinary group of experts in the field of endocrinology, metabolic surgery, nutrition, cardiology and official representatives of leading diabetes organisations will develop guidelines and recommendations. A draft with proposed guidelines will be presented during dedicated plenary sessions of the World Congress in London and discussed by other thought leaders and by the audience.

We cordially invite you to attend the joint DSS-II and 3rd World Congress and actively participate in a seminal event that will lay the foundation of modern, multimodality care of diabetes.

The Sugar Reduction Summitt: Science, Policy and Public Health

The forthcoming Sugar Reduction Summit – Science, viagra 40mg Policy and Public Health will take place at the Royal Society, see London on Wednesday 9th July 2014.

Registration is now open and full details for this important one day event, can be found on the website www.thesugarreductionsummit.com
Early Bird rates will apply until 12th June.

Sugar’s role in obesity has dominated news headlines this year invoking parallels between the tobacco and food industries and isolating sugar’s role in diet-related diseases. With almost two thirds of adults in the UK now classified as overweight or obese, there is no doubt that obesity is one of the most serious public health challenges of our time.  But what part does sugar play in obesity and ill-health? When consumed as part of a calorie-controlled diet, should it be singled out as any more to blame or any more harmful than fats or other carbohydrates and should sugar reduction be a health priority?

With the Scientific Advisory Committee on Nutrition’s Carbohydrate Report due out in June, The Sugar Reduction Summit provides a much needed neutral and balanced platform for policy makers and key stakeholders within the health, scientific and food and nutrition industries to come together and explore evidence-based research on the impact of sugar in our diets and to debate whether sugar reduction should be a health priority, how harmful sugar really is and how sugar reduction might be achieved practically.

The event, which is supported by The Wolfson Institute, will include high level briefings from leading experts followed by panel debates and open-floor discussions which will allow key questions to be asked and explored in a balanced and objective environment.

To see the full programme and confirmed speakers, please click here. Hosted places have been reserved for press and policy makers.

Presentations include:

•   An overview of sugar consumption trends from Public Health England

•   A look at the systematic reviews on the harms of excessive sugar consumption

•   Dental evidence and its impact on the setting of upper limits of consumption

•   The arguments for and against the hypothesis that sugar is harmful beyond its calorific value

•   Reformulation strategies and the food industry’s role in sugar reduction

•   Government’s role in regulating nutritional content of food

•   Personal choice and consumer responsibility

•   A review of population based interventions and their effectiveness

Space hoppers invade Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park

Space hoppers invade Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park

The Copper Box Arena on the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park will today host sports involving space hoppers and dodging volleyballs as the winners of a national schools competition test their newly created sports with schoolchildren from East London. The event highlights the benefits of physical activity as part of National Obesity Awareness Week.

The best three entries from a national schools competition, in which entrants were challenged to devise a new and innovative sport or game, will be showcased at a reception hosted by the National Obesity Forum. Students from schools around the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park will test the innovative, quirky and unique games alongside their inventors. Entries include ‘Foot Golf’, a game of golf played with a football and using cones, logs and tunnels as obstacles, ‘Space Ball’, football played on space hoppers and ‘Volley-Dodge’, a mixture between dodgeball and volleyball.

The winners and runners-up in both junior and infant categories of the competition, who produced picture diaries of their physical activity, will also attend the event.

Almost 20 per cent of children aged 10 and 11 in the UK are categorised as obese, with only one in five local authorities allocating funding to tackle childhood obesity. The National Obesity Forum’s goal for National Obesity Awareness Week 2015 is to encourage people to take action and promote the manageable ways obesity can be tackled.

The winners of the national schools competition will be awarded funding towards the development of an outdoor area for their school, and the runners-up will receive funding for sports equipment for their school, courtesy of The Walt Disney Company.

Professor David Haslam, Chair of the National Obesity Forum, said:

“A third of children aged 10-11 are either overweight or obese, and this is something that must be addressed. We need to encourage young people to be physically active and this was our goal when running our competition. We’ve had hundreds of remarkable entries and are very pleased to be able to showcase the winners and runners up today. It’s been a great success and we’ve received outstanding feedback from schools and parents.”

Matthew Grossman, Vice President Citizenship, The Walt Disney Company (Europe, Middle East & Africa) said:

“The Walt Disney Company seeks to inspire children and their families to lead healthier lifestyles. National Obesity Awareness Week is a great campaign and we’re excited to be supporting the competition for the second year. One of the winners from 2014 used Disney’s funding to build an outdoor gym that benefited the whole school and we’re excited about how this year’s prizes will inspire and benefit more children around the UK.”

Karen West, Head of Sport and Health, Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, said:

“We are delighted to offer fun and exciting activities in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park which appeal to all age groups. This innovative project provides us with exciting new ways to encourage young people to become physically active in order to reduce their chances of becoming obese.”

Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust and the Rotherham Titans help mark National Obesity Awareness Week with a juicy cycle challenge

The Rotherham Titans star players and staff from throughout the Trust have been helping to raise awareness of obesity by taking part in a bike-blender cycle to make healthy fruit smoothies. The event, held in the hospital’s Community Corner, was a great success, helping to raise awareness of healthy living and the variety of services available in Rotherham to tackle obesity.

Reshape Rotherham, TRFT’s free, local weight management service and the Rotherham MoreLife Club, for overweight and obese children and their families, were present at the event to provide information about the services and support they provide. Alyson Fedak, Weight Management Team Leader for Nutrition and Dietetic Services at TRFT, said: “The bike-blender cycle was a really fun way to engage with members of the public about obesity and healthy living, whilst also raising awareness of the weight management services available in Rotherham. I would like to thank everyone who took part and to the Rotherham Titans for supporting us.”
